SimplerCloud 101 – Why we’re different

In this article, we’re working through the hullabaloo around our launch to talk a bit about some of the things we feel make SimplerCloud unique.

SimplerCloud servers (known as Servelets) are virtualized servers accessible over the internet that are deployed in real-time and scalable.

Is SimplerCloud different from other providers?

Yes, we think so. For some time now, we’ve been feeling that Asia remains behind the US or European market in terms of innovation and cloud service offerings. The hole in the Asian, and Singapore cloud hosting market relates to availability of quality cloud hosting services for organisations that do not have enterprise-level budgets.  Also, much of cloud hosting is shrouded in over-management in areas such as the order cycle, service provisioning and minimal offerings.  While the tide of cloud computing change has brought the major automation platforms to Asia, the high price tags of their adoption by traditional web hosting providers mean that they have to slap on matching prices for their cloud hosting customers. This marketplace does not cater to the small business, start-up or agency that needs cloud automation and servers.

But the Cloud should be simple and easy to use

You would think so. We know you get it, but here’s a bit more about SimplerCloud.

Are we a shared hosting provider?

Nope. With shared hosting or virtual servers, you manage a number of web sites through your FTP account.  You do not have the root administrator password or manage the server yourself.

What about Virtual Private Servers (VPS)?

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) usually refer to software-based virtualized servers.  Traditional VPS providers multiplex larger dedicated servers and allow customers to “share,” using  container technology to isolate multiple users on a single server from one another whilst running a single shared instance of the operating system.

Are we a dedicated server provider?

Definitely not. A traditional dedicated server plan usually has a set-up fee, an annual contract (or longer), and, in Singapore and Asia, severely higher price points than a cloud service.  Dedicated servers are provisioned as individual servers with OS and other customized software licenses.  In Asia, hard copy signature contracts are actually still usually required. The lead time is 3 to as many as 14 days. When there are specification changes, this process applies again.  Additionally, you pay for the server 24 hours a day, even if you do not use it.
